About the Presenter

Elaine Jones brings a lifetime of passion and expertise in marine education to her presentations. She began her career as a public-school science teacher before serving 30 years as the Education Director for the Maine Department of Marine Resources. During her tenure, she designed and built the Maine State Aquarium (1995), and three-years later acquired and transformed the Burnt Island Light Station into an outstanding educational and recreational destination. At both facilities, thousands of students, teachers, and visitors have experienced hands-on learning at its best through interactive exhibits and living history programs.

As founder of the nonprofit Lighthouse Education & Nautical Studies (LENS), Elaine’s educational mission continues in retirement through: sponsoring summer camps on Burnt Island, teacher enrichment programs, and research/support for Maine’s lighthouse owners. To help sustain these initiatives, she created the Boothbay Harbor Treasure Hunt - a growing, family adventure that will feature 12 destination stops in 2026. She warmly invites Juniper/McKown Point residents to join in this “swashbuckling” adventure from June 21 – September 30th.
